5 Tell-Tale Signs You Need to Get a New Mindset
Mindset is defined as “an established set of attitudes held by someone.” Basically it’s your overall attitude. Do you find that you generally have a positive or negative attitude about life, work, or relationships?
I have a positive attitude about everything. I’m one of those glass half full kind of gals. I also find this topic extremely interesting. One reason is that I have people in my life who have a predominately negative attitude. I also tend to be analytical and what I have found to be interesting is that for those people who do have a negative mindset, things often seem to go poorly for them. Or at least in their mind it does.
And I would say that I experience many positive experiences. But then the question is…Are those who have a negative mindset just not seeing the positive or silver lining in each situation and only focusing on the negative?
Believe that you can and you’re halfway there. – Theodore Roosevelt
What type of mindset do you tend to have? Having a positive mindset is helpful to you in so many ways:
- People prefer to hang around positive people
- Studies show that employers tend to hire and promote those with a positive mindset
- Being positive is good for your overall health
- Those who are positive tend to have more self confidence
As you can see, having a positive mindset does have some benefits. So which do you have; a positive or negative mindset? Here are 5 tell-tale signs that it’s time for you get a new positive mindset:
1. Expect the Worse to Happen
I have a friend who expects the worse to happen in every situation. She claims that by doing so she won’t get her hopes up thus she is protecting herself from being disappointed. What’s the fun in that! I would much rather expect for a positive outcome. For example, if someone buys and lottery ticket and then thinks, “I probably not going to win anyway.” Then why bother buying one if the first place? My attitude is more of excitement as to what might happen. Will I be disappointed if it doesn’t? Sure but it’s fun and uplifting to thinking about all of the “what-if” possibilities if it DOES happen.
2. Think Bad Things Always Happen to You
There are some people who think this black cloud constantly hover over them. And whenever they are faced with disappointment in their life, they say, “See, I told you nothing good ever happens to me.” Perhaps this is because they are only focusing on the bad or negative situations. They are totally ignoring all of the good things.
When my son was in preschool there was an activity they did which I felt would be a great thing for adults to do as well. They had several colored circles and before going to bed the child is to write all of the things that happened that day that they were grateful for and then put the circles on the wall. What was amazing for the child to see if that by the end of the week, there wall was covered with so many circles.
Taking time to appreciate and be grateful for all of the little things in your life will make a big difference in changing your mindset. And with a new mindset, you may start to noticing that more positive experiences are happening to you.
3. Lack Self Confidence
Having a negative mindset and lack of confidence go hand-in-hand. My post Revlon’s #LOVETEST, talks about a study that was performed where women were to do things over a period of 30 days in order to lift their self confidence. And what they found was that by improving someone’s self confidence it also improved other areas of their life as well.
Like it not, people don’t want to hang around the Debbie Downer. Women and men tend to prefer to be a relationship with someone who is confident. It can be difficult to be around someone who lacks self confidence because they have a tendency to bring you down and you feel like you need to continually try and bring them up. And this type of attitude won’t help get you promoted at work. (I have a new program starting soon called 30 Days to Loving Yourself so be sure to sign up for email list to get updates on that.)
4. Lack Motivation
Through my virtual assisting business I see this behavior constantly. There are so many people who want to achieve certain goals but yet they never take action to make it happen. We just can’t sit back and do nothing. I have always wanted to be a full time blogger. That didn’t happen with me not taking the steps to create the blog and network with my readers.
The lack of motivation goes right back to expecting the worst to happen. They think, “Why should I bother, it’s not going to work out anyway.” Well, but if you don’t try you’ll never know. I definitely believe that you never know what will happen so go for it.
5. Don’t Handle Adversity Well
Unfortunate situations happen to all us. But it’s one’s attitude and how they handle that situation and bounce back from it which is important. Those with a positive mindset can objectively look at the situation and learn from it. As the quote states, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
However, if one has a negative mindset they may not see the lesson in the situation and turn to addictive behaviors such as food, alcohol and drugs to numb themselves from dealing with it. I believe everything happens for a reason. A person may get fired from their job and then receive an offer for a better job with higher pay.
Having a positive mindset serves me well. Being positive and upbeat just feels good. So think about your mindset. What is the harm of looking at life through positive glasses? You may be surprised at how things will start to shift for you to a more positive outcome.
