5 Ways to Improve Your Happiness
Happiness is the universal desire. Unfortunately, for so many it seems like it is always just out of reach. Have you ever noticed that people who are happy seem to have a content life? So then the question raises; is happiness the result or is happiness the cause?
Kind of like the chicken or the egg mystery. I believe that when you are happy, it affects everything else in your life and actually brings more happiness producing opportunities.
However, feeling happy when it seems like everything is going wrong can be a difficult feat. Yet happiness is the key to improving your situation. So what do you do?
When things aren’t going your way, you need to dig deep in your memory and reminder an event when you were most happy. Keep that memory in your mind until you feel your mood shift. Now this remedy won’t last forever but it will pull you out of your slump long enough for you to get the drive to do some other things to improve your happiness. Here are 5 ways to improve your happiness:
1. List 5 Things You Love Doing but Aren’t
Thinking we don’t have enough time in our day is the biggest culprit for not doing the things we love. This could be walking on the beach, playing with the kids or the animals, reading, dancing, arts and crafts or whenever brings a smile to your face. Grab a journal or a piece of paper and make a list of 5 things you enjoy doing but just haven’t had the time. The next step is to carve out 10 minutes in your calendar each day to devote to doing at least one of these. You will be amazed how it will lift your mood and even make your more productive.
2. List 5 Ways You Can Treat Yourself
This exercise is similar to the first one but this one is all about loving yourself. Activities such as getting a massage or pedicure fall into this category. Or something as simple as sitting outdoors and enjoying a cup of tea. Take some time and list all of the ways you can give yourself a gift. Once you have this list, choose a day each week in your calendar and make a date with yourself for this special treat. You’ll find that you will start to look forward to it and help offset some of the negative emotions.
3. Look at Beautiful Things
Spending some time looking at things you find beautiful or inspiring such art and nature. So many of us don’t take the time to appreciate the beauty of nature. We get so caught up in our busy lives that we miss what is all around us. Doing this will create connections that we often neglect to notice. You will also be surprised that you may receive some inspirational ideas in the process.
Meditation is definitely a big one for me. Spending at least 10 minutes meditating every day helps clear my head, reduce stress and keeps me focused on my passion and purpose. This can be simply sitting in a quiet room where you will be undisturbed, relaxing and clearing your mind. Meditation has many health benefits as well. If you’re ever considered it, you should definitely give it a try.
5. Create an Activity Board
Write the words, “Happy” in the center of a piece of poster board. Look for quotes, sayings and images in magazines and on the internet that you like and that inspire you. Cut out and glue these to the poster board. As you surround yourself with the images of your intention, who you want to become and what you want to create, your awareness and happiness will grow. I am living proof that happiness is the key to success and good health. I was at a point in my life where I was depressed and felt hopeless. But something told me to dig deep and find something to be happy about. My first thought was my children and how proud I was of them. The next step I took was to make that list of things I wasn’t doing that I wish I was. Once I started doing those things and honoring myself by making “me time” everything in my life started to change. Trust me…it works. Give it try, what do you have to lose.
