Flora Morris BrownQ: Tell the readers a little about yourself and your book.

I have loved school and books for as far back as I can remember so it’s no surprise that I became a teacher, first in junior high English, then university teacher training, and finally teaching critical thinking in a community college. When I retired from teaching, I planned to write my life story mainly for my children, but instead I became fascinated with positive psychology research, the happiness movement, and the work of spiritual transformation leaders. Long before the researchers and positive psychologists popularized the idea that we create our own happiness, I had already discovered that any chance I had of surviving my baby boomer childhood growing up in a segregated inner city was in my hands. Based on my experiences, highlights of research, and ancient wisdom my book, Color Your Life Happy: Create Your Unique Path and Claim the Joy You Deserve, promotes the idea that we have the power, tools, and the right to create the lives we want.

Q: How long have you been writing and how did you get started?

Along with my fascination with school came my love of words. I’ve been writing since childhood. I still have some of the earliest poems I wrote, thanks to my mother’s insistence that I date and save them. Throughout school I created articles and essays, but after college moved into coauthoring textbooks, publishing freelance articles for trade publications, and crafting instructional materials for my children and my students. After attending the first Blog World Conference in Las Vegas, NV in 2007 I began blogging about happiness, then later about education, and self-publishing. In recent years I’ve written several recipe books and books on starting a home-based business, building confidence, and beating procrastination. My current book is the 2nd edition of my book on happiness and my 11th book.

Q: What is the main focus or purpose of your book?

We each deserve the best that life offers. To get it, we much develop our inner strength, resilience, and belief in ourselves. Our happiness is not dependent on luck, background, or economic status. Although these factors play a small part, it’s how we view and respond to events, changes, and adversity that determine our level of happiness.

Q: What is the most meaningful or inspiring part of being a writer?

The most wonderful thing about being a writer, whether we write fiction or nonfiction, is the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. Although we all long for bestseller status, we are actually writing to one: the one person who needed to read what we share, in the way we share it, and at the very moment they discover our message. When we make a difference in another person’s life, we make a positive impact on our own lives as well.

Q: What’s on the horizon for you and your writing?

My next project scheduled for January 2016 release is a coloring book for adults full of inspiring, creative and relaxing activities. I’m also working on two projects for indie authors: a book marketing journal and a book of timely tips for indie-published authors.

I agree that writers have the ability to change lives, even save lives. It’s not unusual to see a testimonial from someone who had his or her life completely changed from reading a simple article or book. Interesting! I followed you on Twitter.
